What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that form on the muscle tissue in the uterus. These growths are not associated with cancer and do not increase your risk of developing cancer. The size, shape, and location of uterine fibroids can vary. They may be present inside or outside the uterus. You may have one or many uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids can grow rapidly or gradually over a number of years.

What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?

Many women with uterine fibroids do no have any symptoms. Other women experience mild to severe symptoms that can include heavy or irregular bleeding, frequent urination, menstrual pain, pelvic pain, low back pain, and pain during intercourse. Every woman is unique, so you may experience different symptoms.

How are uterine fibroids diagnosed?

Uterine fibroids can be detected during a pelvic exam or pelvic ultrasound. During a routine pelvic exam, your doctor may feel a firm, irregular mass located near the middle of your pelvis. If uterine fibroids are suspected, additional testing can help us gather more information and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

Common diagnostic tests for uterine fibroids may include pelvic ultrasound, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and other advanced imaging techniques. Dr. Rose will choose an appropriate test based on your symptoms and the results of your pelvic exam. Testing can also be used to monitor your condition and track fibroid growth over time.

How are uterine fibroids managed and treated?

Uterine fibroids do not always require treatment. Fibroids can stop growing or even shrink as a woman approaches menopause. If you do not have symptoms, or if your symptoms are very mild, Dr. Rose may simply monitor your condition. We recommend regular appointments to look for signs of uterine fibroid growth.

When uterine fibroids do cause significant symptoms, there are a variety of effective treatment options. Drug therapy can reduce the severity of symptoms such as heavy bleeding and menstrual pain. Other treatment options may include hysteroscopy, Her Option® endometrial ablation, and surgical therapy.
