Pelvic Ultrasound Exams for Noninvasive Diagnostics
Pelvic ultrasounds use sound waves to capture detailed images of the female organs. If you’ve been suffering from pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, or other gynecological problems, we may recommend a pelvic ultrasound. This procedure can help us determine the cause of your symptoms and select the appropriate treatment.
What is a pelvic ultrasound?
A pelvic ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic exam that allows your doctor to assess important structures, including the bladder, vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Dr. Rose may perform the exam on the outside of your abdomen or through the vagina. The type of procedure selected will depend on the reason for the ultrasound.
Each type of exam has certain advantages. The abdominal approach provides a panoramic view of the all the structures in the pelvis. The vaginal approach can help us get a better view of certain structures. In some cases, both methods may be needed to reach an accurate diagnosis.
Why would I need a pelvic ultrasound?
Dr. Rose may recommend a pelvic ultrasound for a variety of reasons. An ultrasound provides more detailed information than a manual exam. The specialists at Rose Gynecology can use pelvic ultrasound to diagnose certain gynecological conditions, including endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, and postmenopausal bleeding. This procedure may also be used to evaluate the presence and position of birth control methods such as Essure® and intrauterine devices (IUDs).
How is the procedure performed?
Pelvic ultrasounds are performed in the comfort of our office. The exam typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete. The procedure is not painful. You may feel a small amount of pressure, but you shouldn’t experience any pain. If you’re having an abdominal ultrasound, you may need to have a full bladder before the exam. Dr. Rose will provide you with specific instructions.
During an abdominal ultrasound, a member of our staff will apply a warm gel to the surface of your skin. A small device, called a transducer, will be placed on your skin and gently moved around. If you’re having a vaginal ultrasound, a thin transducer will be inserted into your vagina. The overall procedure is similar to a routine Pap smear.
What happens after the procedure?
