Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the interior of your uterus. We may recommend diagnostic hysteroscopy if you suffer from abnormal uterine bleeding or other symptoms that could indicate a gynecological disorder. This procedure can help us determine the cause of your symptoms and develop an effective treatment plan.
What is diagnostic hysteroscopy?
Diagnostic hysteroscopy allows your doctor to detect problems that affect the uterus. Dr. Rose uses this technique to look for signs of certain abnormalities. A hysteroscope is a thin camera that can be inserted into your uterus through the vagina. The hysteroscope transmits an image of your uterus onto a screen. These images provide visual access to the interior of your uterus.
Why would I need diagnostic hysteroscopy?
The most common reasons for diagnostic hysteroscopy are abnormal uterine bleeding and postmenopausal bleeding. This procedure may also be recommended for women who have an abnormal Pap test. Diagnostic hysteroscopy can be used to examine polyps, fibroids, and other uterine abnormalities. Dr. Rose may also use diagnostic hysteroscopy to locate an intrauterine device or to place Essure® inserts for permanent birth control.
How is the procedure performed?
Diagnostic hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive exam that typically doesn’t require hospitalization or general anesthesia. The procedure can be performed in the comfort of our office in less than an hour. To make the procedure easier, Dr. Rose may dilate your cervix before the exam. We may also offer you a local anesthetic or medication to help you relax.
During the exam, the hysteroscope will be inserted into your vagina and gently moved through the cervix into the uterus. Fluid is used to expand the uterus. This step allows us to see the uterine lining more clearly. Dr. Rose will examine the lining of the uterus and the openings of the fallopian tubes through the hysteroscope. When the procedure is complete, the hysteroscope will be removed.
What happens after the procedure?
Most women do not require special care after diagnostic hysteroscopy. You will be able to return home immediately afterwards. A member of our staff will contact you when the results of your exam are available.
It’s normal for women to experience mild cramping and vaginal bleeding for one to two days after diagnostic hysteroscopy.
